Chewy Sesame Pumpkin Donut

Let’s make a chewy sesame pumpkin donut! This is not your usual fluffy, fat donut. Yet it is chewy, soft, and a melting pumpkin donut with sesame seeds that makes your mouth drool! Try this healthy version and gluten-free donut!

Let's make a chewy sesame pumpkin donut! This is not your usual fluffy, moist donut; it is chewy, soft donut with sesame seeds.

Try these chewy sesame pumpkin donuts! crispy sesame crust, soft pumpkin inside, and irresistibly snackable. Perfect for fall or anytime!

Pumpkin season is here, and there’s no better way to embrace the cozy fall vibes than by making a batch of chewy pumpkin donuts. These Chewy Sesame Pumpkin Donuts are inspired by Indonesia’s famous donat pisang wijen Ci Mehong and given a seasonal pumpkin twist. With a crisp sesame crust and soft chewy pumpkin center, they’re the perfect snack to enjoy warm with tea or coffee.

The Inspiration: Donat Pisang Wijen Ci Mehong

If you’ve ever heard of or tasted Donat Pisang Wijen Ci Mehong, you’ll know why it’s such a beloved street snack in Indonesia. These chewy banana donuts, coated generously in sesame seeds, are famous for their unique texture: crispy on the outside, soft and chewy inside, and not overly sweet. They’re often sold warm, making them an irresistible afternoon snack to pair with tea. But the minus is so too expensive for a donut, that’s why I make them

Let's make a chewy sesame pumpkin donut! This is not your usual fluffy, moist donut; it is chewy, soft donut with sesame seeds.

For this recipe, I wanted to capture the same chewy magic but with a seasonal twist. Instead of banana, I used pumpkin, which gives the donuts a subtle earthy sweetness and beautiful golden color. The sesame seeds still play their role, adding crunch and nutty aroma, while the glutinous rice flour keeps that signature chewy bite. inside, and never too sweet.

The result? A donut that feels both familiar and new, bringing together Indonesian nostalgia and cozy fall comfort in every bite.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

Let's make a chewy sesame pumpkin donut! This is not your usual fluffy, moist donut; it is chewy, soft donut with sesame seeds.
  • Chewy & soft – not your typical cakey donut, these have a delightful chew inspired by Indonesian sesame donuts.
  • Pumpkin flavor – adds natural sweetness and a subtle fall aroma.
  • Sesame crunch – the nutty crust makes every bite extra special.
  • Snack or dessert – perfect with tea, coffee, or as a festive holiday treat
  • Let's make a chewy sesame pumpkin donut! This is not your usual fluffy, moist donut; it is chewy, soft donut with sesame seeds.

This Chewy Sesame Pumpkin Donut recipe is my way of making a healthy version of a donut but keeping the chewy and filling part. These pumpkin donuts will win your heart with every chewy, nutty bite.

Ingredients  of Chewy Sesame Pumpkin Donut

Let's make a chewy sesame pumpkin donut! This is not your usual fluffy, moist donut; it is chewy, soft donut with sesame seeds.
  • Steamed Pumpkin: The star of the recipe! Pumpkin purée adds natural moisture and a rich flavor while keeping the donuts soft and chewy. You can use homemade pumpkin purée from freshly steamed pumpkin or store-bought canned pumpkin. Just make sure it’s pure pumpkin without added sugar or spices.
  • Sugar sweetens the donuts and balances the earthy pumpkin flavor. You can use regular white sugar, but a little brown sugar adds extra moisture and a subtle caramel-like depth.
  • Vanilla Powder/Extract: This adds a gentle, sweet aroma that pairs beautifully with pumpkin. Vanilla rounds out the flavors and makes the donuts taste warm and comforting.
  • Salt: A small pinch of salt may seem simple, but it enhances the overall flavor and balances the sweetness so the donuts don’t taste flat.
  • Baking Powder Double Active: This is the leavening agent that helps the donuts puff slightly while frying, giving them a light, tender bite instead of being too dense.
  • Glutinous Rice Flour: The secret ingredient for that irresistible chew! Unlike regular rice flour, glutinous rice flour (sometimes called sticky rice flour or “mochiko”) gives the donuts their bouncy, chewy texture. This is what makes them different from cake donuts.
  • Sesame Seeds: Rolled on the outside of each donut, sesame seeds create a crisp, nutty coating that turns golden as the donuts fry. They add crunch, flavor, and that classic donat wijen look.
  • Oil for Frying: Neutral oil (like canola, sunflower, or peanut oil) works best for deep-frying. It ensures an even, golden crust without overpowering the sesame aroma.

How to Make Chewy Sesame Pumpkin Donut

First, place the smooth mashed pumpkin in a large mixing bowl. Add sugar, vanilla powder (or extract), salt, and baking powder. Mix with your hands or a spatula until everything is evenly combined.

Second, gradually add the glutinous rice flour to the mixture. Knead with your hands until a smooth dough forms. The dough should feel soft and pliable, but not sticky.

Let's make a chewy sesame pumpkin donut! This is not your usual fluffy, moist donut; it is chewy, soft donut with sesame seeds.

Then, divide the dough into equal portions, about 60 g each. Roll each piece into a ball, then gently press your thumb through the center to form a donut shape. Smooth and widen the hole slightly so it keeps its shape while frying.
Next, lightly dampen the surface of each donut (this helps the seeds stick), then roll generously in sesame seeds until fully coated.

Now, heat oil in a deep pan over medium heat. Fry the donuts in batches, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Cook until both sides are golden brown and crisp, flipping once for even cooking. Remove and drain on a paper towel.
Finally, serve the chewy sesame pumpkin donuts warm for the best chewy texture. Pair with hot tea or coffee for the perfect snack!

Serve and enjoy!

Ingredients of Halloween Dirt Cups

  • Chocolate Instant Pudding Mix: This is the base for the creamy chocolate layer in the dirt cup. It’s quick and easy to prepare with cold milk, providing a rich and decadent texture. You’ll need one package of instant chocolate pudding mix, plus milk to prepare it with.
  • Cold Milk: Used to prepare the chocolate instant pudding mix. Cold milk helps the pudding set quickly and gives it a smooth, creamy texture. If you want a richer pudding, you can substitute half-and-half or whole milk. – I always prefer using whole milk for recipes like these where you want the pudding to be nice and thick!
  • Heavy Cream: This is used for making the whipped cream layer that sits on top of the dirt cup, providing a luxurious texture and a nice contrast to the crunchy cookies.
  • Chocolate Cookies Crumbs: These crushed chocolate cookies are the “dirt” in the dirt cup. They add a rich, chocolaty crunch that contrasts perfectly with the creamy pudding. Oreos or any chocolate sandwich cookie will work here, and you can even use graham cracker crumbs for a different twist.
  • Lady Finger Biscuits: These are a fun addition to the dirt cup, adding extra texture and acting as a “grave marker” or base for the pudding layers. Lady fingers are light and airy, but you could substitute them with any other light sponge or even store-bought cookies if needed. Don’t forget to add RIP words on it
  • Gummy Worms: The classic Halloween topping! These little gummy worms make it look like your dirt cup is a mini Halloween graveyard, and they add a fun chewy texture. It’s not dirt pudding without a gummy worm lingering in the dirt! They’re essential for graveyard dirt cups.
  • Eye-shaped Candy: These add a creepy effect to the dirt cup, making it the perfect Halloween treat. For a creepy twist, add some edible candy eyes on top to give your dirt cup a fun and eerie look

Let’s Make Halloween Dirt Cups

Spooky, creamy, and fun! These Halloween Dirt Cups are a perfect treat for your Halloween party with layers of chocolate pudding, cookie crumbs, and gummy worms.

First, prepare the pudding:
In a medium bowl, whisk together the chocolate instant pudding mix and cold milk. Continue whisking until smooth, and let it set for a few minutes until it thickens into a pudding-like texture.

Next, whip the cream:
In another bowl, beat the heavy cream until soft peaks form. Once the pudding has thickened, gently fold the whipped cream into the pudding, creating a smooth, creamy mixture.

Assemble the dirt cups:
Begin layering your dirt cups by adding a layer of chocolate pudding to the bottom of each cup. Then, sprinkle a generous layer of crushed chocolate cookies over the pudding to create the “dirt” layer. Repeat the process until your cups are filled, finishing with a layer of cookie crumbs on top to make it look like dirt.

Decorate the cups

Serve and enjoy

Refrigerate the dirt cups for about 30 minutes to allow the layers to set. Once chilled, they’re ready to serve! These creepy, delicious dirt cups will be the perfect Halloween treat

They’re simple to make, full of marshmallowy goodness, and decorated to look like Frankenstein’s Monster: green skin, bolts, and all!

Before we dive into the recipe, let’s talk about the monster behind the treat!

A Quick Frankenstein History

Did you know Frankenstein isn’t the name of the monster? It’s actually the name of the scientist—Dr. Victor Frankenstein, who created the monster in Mary Shelley’s groundbreaking 1818 novel Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus. The creature, often misunderstood and rejected by its creator, has become a symbol of isolation, tragedy, and, of course, horror.

Over the years, Frankenstein’s Monster has been adapted countless times in pop culture, especially around Halloween. With his green skin, bolts in the neck, and somewhat tragic backstory, he’s the perfect spooky character to bring into the kitchen. Now, let’s get to the fun part! making these Frankenstein Rice Krispies!

Halloween doesn’t have to be all about candy bars from the store. With a little creativity, you can serve treats that are both homemade and memorable. These Frankenstein Rice Crispy Treats are not only delicious but also bring the Halloween spirit alive on your table.

Why do you need to make it?

These Frankenstein Rice Krispies treats are perfect for any haloween party or celebration. they’re a fun twist on a classic treat!

For the Taste: The sweetness of the marshmallow perfectly wraps around the crispy Frankenstein Rice Krispies cereal! The candy eyes, edible bolts, and gooey chocolate hair add extra layers of sweetness with every bite!

Texture: These homemade treats have that ideal balance of texture you crave from Rice Krispies treats! They’re soft, chewy, crunchy, sticky, and airy, just like the classic ones from the store!

And for the last, if you asked me why this recipe works? The answer is simple, no-bake, and festive. The sweetness of marshmallows pairs with the crunch of cereal, while the salty pretzels and chocolate add balance. Decorating them is just as fun as eating them, making this recipe a Halloween win for all ages.

Whether you’re making them with your kids, preparing for a party, or just craving something fun, these little monsters are sure to be a hit. This Halloween, skip the boring snacks and let Frankenstein steal the spotlight, which is crispy, gooey, and frightfully cute!

So go ahead, get your Rice Krispies on, add a little green food coloring, and bring Frankenstein’s Monster to life in your kitchen. After all, Halloween isn’t just about the costumes—it’s about the treats too!

Ingredients of Frankenstein Rice Krispies

These Frankenstein Rice Krispies treats are perfect for any haloween party or celebration. they’re a fun twist on a classic treat!
  • Rice Crispy (Rice Krispies Cereal): This is the base of your treat. The crunchy texture pairs perfectly with the gooey marshmallow mixture, creating that signature Rice Krispies treat consistency everyone loves.
  • Marshmallow: The marshmallows bring all the magic to this recipe. They melt down into a smooth, gooey mixture that binds the cereal together. Plus, they add that sweet, melt-in-your-mouth goodness.
  • Unsalted Butter: This helps the marshmallows melt smoothly and gives the treats that rich, buttery flavor. You can use salted butter if that’s what you have, but unsalted butter allows you to control the salt content better.
  • White Chocolate: For decorating your Frankenstein treats, white chocolate is perfect for creating eyes, bolts, or any other spooky details. The smooth texture of melted white chocolate makes it easy to pipe onto your Rice Krispies and gives a nice contrast against the green color.
These Frankenstein Rice Krispies treats are perfect for any haloween party or celebration. they’re a fun twist on a classic treat!
  • Green Food Coloring: The green food coloring is essential for giving your treats that classic Frankenstein color. It adds the perfect spooky touch and makes these Rice Krispies look just like Frankenstein’s Monster.
  • Chocolate Sprinkle: These are great for adding some extra texture and decoration to your Frankenstein Rice Krispies hair. The sprinkle can resemble the creature’s bolts or add a bit of extra fun to the design.
  • Black Food Coloring: Use black food coloring to make additional details like eyebrows, stitches, or the outline of Frankenstein’s features. It helps bring your treats to life with spooky precision! Used to pipe on the “stitch” details to give your treats that final Frankenstein touch.

How to Make Frankenstein Rice Krispies

First, prepare the tray; Lay a piece of parchment paper at the bottom of a 20×20 cm tray and set it aside. This step ensures the Rice Krispies will be easy to remove after they’ve cooled.

In a medium-sized pot, add the marshmallows and butter. Melt the ingredients over medium heat, stirring constantly until the marshmallows are completely melted and smooth.

Once the marshmallows have melted, remove the pot from the heat. Immediately pour the Rice Krispies cereal into the pot, stirring well to coat each piece with the marshmallow mixture.

Then, quickly transfer the Rice Krispies mixture into the prepared tray. Use your hands (lightly greased or with parchment paper) to press the mixture evenly into the tray. Let it cool for 10-15 minutes or until the mixture is firm enough to cut.

In a separate pot, bring water to a boil. Set a heatproof bowl over the pot (bain-marie method) and melt the white chocolate, stirring occasionally. Once melted, remove the bowl from the heat. Take about 2 tablespoons of the melted white chocolate and mix it with black food coloring to create the “stitch” details.

Next, add green food coloring to the remaining white chocolate and stir until it’s well-mixed. Set both bowls aside to cool slightly.

These Frankenstein Rice Krispies treats are perfect for any haloween party or celebration. they’re a fun twist on a classic treat!

Let’s decorate

Once the Frankenstein Rice Krispies mixture has cooled, cut it into 10 equal pieces. Dip about a third of each square into the green-colored white chocolate or spread the chocolate over the top with a spatula. Sprinkle chocolate sprinkles on top to mimic Frankenstein’s wild hair.

For the eyes, place eye-shaped candy onto each Rice Krispies treat. Then, use the melted black chocolate to pipe on stitches or outline Frankenstein’s features to give each treat its own unique look.

These Frankenstein Rice Krispies treats are perfect for any haloween party or celebration. they’re a fun twist on a classic treat!

Then, allow the decorated Rice Krispies to cool and set for about 15 minutes. This will ensure the chocolate decorations harden and stay in place.

Finally, once the treats are fully set, it’s time to enjoy your spooky Frankenstein Rice Krispies! These are perfect for a Halloween party or just a fun treat to share with friends and family.

These Apple Turnovers are flaky, golden, and packed with sweet apple-cinnamon goodness. Quick to make with puff pastry and topped with vanilla ice cream and homemade caramel sauce, they’re the perfect treat for any time! What’s not to love?

It’s autumn, and that definitely means it’s apple season!

What is Apple Turnover?

An apple turnover is like a mini apple pie, but with a twist. Instead of a traditional pie crust, it’s wrapped in flaky puff pastry, making it easier and quicker to make. The filling is a sweet mixture of soft, spiced apples, just like in apple pie, but the dough is lighter and flakier. It’s like the perfect hand-held dessert for fall, super easy to eat and serve, and you don’t have to deal with slicing pie!

These Apple Turnovers are flaky, golden, and packed with sweet apple-cinnamon goodness. Quick to make with puff pastry and topped with vanilla ice cream and homemade caramel sauce, they’re the perfect treat for any time! What’s not to love?

I’m all about simple, no-fuss recipes, which is why I love using ready-rolled frozen puff pastry. Sure, you could make your own pastry, but honestly, this shortcut lets you whip up a delicious dessert in no time with minimal effort. Plus, as these turnovers bake, your house will smell incredible. They’re the kind of dessert that works when you’re in the mood for something quick on a cozy night, but fancy enough to impress at a dinner party.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe:
  • Warm Meets Cold: The combo of hot, flaky pastry with a scoop of cold vanilla ice cream? It’s pure dessert magic.
  • Time-Saving Shortcut: Using pre-made puff pastry means you get the taste of a bakery-quality dessert without the long prep.
  • Crowd-Pleaser: Whether you’re hosting a dinner party, a family gathering, or just treating yourself after a long day, these turnovers are a hit.
These Apple Turnovers are flaky, golden, and packed with sweet apple-cinnamon goodness. Quick to make with puff pastry and topped with vanilla ice cream and homemade caramel sauce, they’re the perfect treat for any time! What’s not to love?
  • Customizable: You can easily swap the apples for pears, peaches, or berries depending on the season or your mood.
  • Don’t Skip the Ice Cream: Seriously, a scoop of vanilla ice cream on the side makes all the difference. Trust me.
  • Texture and Flavor contrast: You’ve got the buttery, crispy puff pastry, the tender, cinnamon-sweet apples, the cold, creamy vanilla ice cream, and a drizzle of caramel sauce. It’s all about balance; warm and cold, crispy and creamy, sweet and just the right amount of tangy.

If you’re looking for a dessert that’s both easy and impressive, apple turnovers with vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce should be at the top of your list. So next time you want to capture the comfort of homemade apple pie without the fuss, remember: turnovers are your shortcut to happiness. And with a scoop of ice cream and caramel drizzle, happiness tastes even sweeter. Let’s dive in!

Ingredients of Apple Turnovers

These Apple Turnovers are flaky, golden, and packed with sweet apple-cinnamon goodness. Quick to make with puff pastry and topped with vanilla ice cream and homemade caramel sauce, they’re the perfect treat for any time! What’s not to love?
  • sheet Puff Pastry thawed; I like to keep sheets of frozen puff pastry in the freezer as they are perfect for a range of quick meals. Most of what you buy from the supermarket is dairy-free and vegan, but just check the ingredients to be sure. You need one pre-made frozen sheet of puff pastry from the freezer section of your grocery store. Let it thaw on the counter until pliable and easy to roll out
  • Medium Apple; most apples will work well for this recipe; however, for the best results, you want to try and use a firm, crisp variety of apple. I am using Pink Lady, which is slightly sweeter than Granny Smith
  • Unsalted Butter: Butter enhances the richness of the filling and helps sauté the apples. As it melts, it blends with the brown sugar and spices to create a caramel-like sauce that coats the fruit. Using unsalted butter gives you full control over the flavor, ensuring the filling is perfectly sweet and spiced without being salty.
  • Brown Sugar, to give the apples sweetness and help create a delicious caramel sauce. You can adjust the amount of sugar based on how sweet your apples are.
  • Cinnamon Powder: A little ground cinnamon is the perfect partner for the apples. They belong each other
  • Cornstarch: This thickens the apple juices to make a syrup so it doesn’t soak the base of the puff pastry. Nobody likes a turnover with a soggy base!
  • Heavy Cream adds a luxurious touch when used in the caramel sauce or drizzled over the baked turnovers. It gives the caramel body, richness, and that silky finish. Cream also balances the sweetness, making the sauce taste smooth and indulgent rather than overly sugary.

How to Make Apple Turnovers

These Apple Turnovers are flaky, golden, and packed with sweet apple-cinnamon goodness. Quick to make with puff pastry and topped with vanilla ice cream and homemade caramel sauce, they’re the perfect treat for any time! What’s not to love?

First, peel and dice the apple into small cubes. In a pan over medium heat, melt the butter, then add the apple, brown sugar, and cinnamon powder. Cook while stirring for about 5–6 minutes until the apples soften and release their juices.

Next, stir in the cornstarch slurry and continue cooking for another 1–2 minutes until the mixture thickens and becomes glossy. Remove from the heat and let it cool slightly.
Meanwhile, preheat your oven to 345℉ (175℃). Line a baking tray with parchment paper for easy cleanup.

These Apple Turnovers are flaky, golden, and packed with sweet apple-cinnamon goodness. Quick to make with puff pastry and topped with vanilla ice cream and homemade caramel sauce, they’re the perfect treat for any time! What’s not to love?

Roll out the thawed puff pastry and slice it into four equal squares. Arrange them neatly on the prepared baking tray
Then, divide the apple filling into four equal portions. Place one portion in the center of each pastry square. Fold the pastry over the filling, wrapping it like an envelope, and press the edges firmly to seal.

After that, brush the tops of the turnovers with heavy cream to give them a golden finish. Bake in the preheated oven for about 20 minutes, or until puffed and golden brown.

Finally, let the turnovers cool for a few minutes. Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top and a generous drizzle of caramel sauce. Enjoy!

Recipe Notes;

  • Other fruits, such as pears, peaches, or berries, can be used in place of apples. Just adjust the sugar depending on the sweetness of the fruit.
  • If puff pastry isn’t available, pie dough can be used as a substitute, though it will yield a denser texture. Puff pastry creates that signature flaky, light bite.
  • Leftovers should be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 day, or in the fridge for 3 days. To reheat, place the turnovers in the oven to restore their crispiness.
  • Don’t overfill: Too much filling makes turnovers burst open while baking
  • If you have time, homemade caramel sauce takes this dessert to another level.

Nothing beats the comfort of homemade milk tea on an evening or rainy days. If you’re anything like me, tea time isn’t just about sipping,it’s about reflecting and exhaling the day’s drama to create comfort. Today, I’m sharing a cozy drink that I’ve been obsessed with lately: Homemade Soy Milk Tea. Smooth, creamy, and lightly nutty, this dairy-free twist on milk tea is perfect whether you’re vegan, lactose-intolerant, or simply looking to try something new.

And guess what? I’ve paired it with my Mitarashi Dango recipe. Here’s mine Mitarashi Dango. those chewy Japanese rice dumplings coated in sweet soy glaze. Together, they make the ultimate East-Asian inspired teatime combo—warm, chewy, sweet, and soothing.

Why Soy Milk Tea?

Soy milk isn’t just a plant-based substitute; more than that, it has a flavor of its own. With a natural nuttiness and gentle sweetness, soy milk gives tea a silky body without overpowering it. It also froths beautifully if you love a café-style topping. Plus, it’s packed with plant protein, making your teatime feel more nourishing. Soy milk is also a great alternative if you’re lactose intolerant or allergic to dairy products.

At first glance, it might sound unusual: the sweet soy-glazed dango with creamy milk tea. But here’s the magic: the chewy texture of the dango contrasts with the smooth creaminess of the tea, while the umami-rich glaze finds balance in the subtle sweetness of soy milk. It’s a harmony of flavors and textures that feels indulgent but wholesome. Or think of it like boba; only bigger and served on top! You can even add tapioca pearls for extra chew, or layer in jelly and pudding for a playful, café-style upgrade

When I first tried this combo, I wasn’t sure if it would work. Soy sauce glaze with creamy tea? But just like so many Japanese flavor pairings, it surprised me in the best way possible. My little teatime felt like a café experience at home, and I instantly knew this would become a repeat ritual.

Now it’s time for the fun part! bringing everything together. Making soy milk tea at home is surprisingly easy, and with just a few simple steps, you’ll have a café-style drink ready to enjoy. The best part? You can serve it hot, iced, or even as a dessert-style drink with whipped cream and dango on top. Let’s dive in!

Ingredients of Soy Milk Tea

  • Roasted Soybean Powder: This is the secret flavor boost that takes soy milk tea to the next level. Roasted soybean powder, also known as kinako in Japanese, has a nutty, toasty aroma that complements both soy milk and tea. It adds warmth and depth to the drink, almost like a roasted nut latte, but lighter and naturally earthy. Plus, it ties beautifully to the dango garnish since kinako is often used in Japanese sweets.
  • Water
  • Soy Milk: The star of this recipe! Soy milk creates a creamy, silky body without dairy. Its subtle sweetness and nutty undertones balance the strength of black tea while keeping the drink light and nourishing. I recommend unsweetened soy milk so you can control the sweetness level.
  • Black Tea: You can use either tea bags or loose-leaf tea. I think black tea offers the best experience, but green tea and herbal tea work too. Your tea base. Strong, malty black tea (like Assam or Ceylon) pairs perfectly with soy milk because it can hold its own against the creaminess. It gives the drink that comforting milk tea vibe we all love, but with a plant-based twist. You can swap with hojicha or matcha if you want different flavor profiles.
  • Sweetened Whipped Cream, non-dairy; This is the topping that makes your homemade soy milk tea feel like a café-style treat. Using non-dairy whipped cream keeps the recipe fully plant-based, and it adds a sweet, fluffy layer on top that contrasts with the earthy tea beneath.
  • 2 Dango garnish (optional); This is where your creativity shines! Adding a skewer of mitarashi dango as a garnish not only looks Instagram-worthy but also connects your drink with Japanese dessert culture.

How to Make Soy Milk Tea

Start by dividing all your ingredients into two portions if you’re making two servings.

Decorate the Glass with Soybean Powder

In a small bowl, combine roasted soybean powder with a little water until it forms a thin paste.

Take a spoon or brush and streak this paste along the inside of your serving glass. This not only adds flavor but also gives your drink a beautiful, toasty pattern—like café art with a Japanese twist.

Pour your brewed black tea into the glass. Slowly add soy milk, letting the two layers swirl together naturally for that pretty marble effect.

Add the Creamy Topping

Pipe or spoon sweetened non-dairy whipped cream over the drink until it forms a thick, fluffy cap.

Dust the whipped cream generously with roasted soybean powder so it’s completely covered in nutty goodness. This topping not only looks stunning but also creates a flavor surprise when you sip through the cream.

Garnish with Dango

For a playful finishing touch, garnish your drink with two skewers of dango on the side. The chewy texture and sweet-salty glaze pair beautifully with the creamy soy milk tea.

Serve right away, and enjoy your homemade soy milk tea with a Japanese dessert; they marry each other!

Imagine holding a warm cup of frothy soy milk tea alongside a skewer of freshly glazed mitarashi dango. It’s the kind of pairing that’s comforting on a quiet evening yet impressive enough to serve when friends come over.

Mitarashi Dango

Sweet meets savory! Try homemade Mitarashi Dango, chewy rice dumplings coated with a caramelized soy glaze that’s surprisingly addictive, and you’ll love.

You’ll be amazed by the taste combination between!

What is Mitarashi Dango?

Mitarashi dango are small, chewy dumplings made from glutinous rice flour (sometimes mixed with tofu for softness). They’re skewered, lightly grilled or torched, then coated in a sauce made of soy sauce, sugar, and cornstarch. The sauce strikes a balance between sweet and salty, making it a favorite for both kids and adults.

If you’ve ever strolled through a Japanese festival or visited a traditional tea house, chances are you’ve seen shiny skewers of dango glazed with a glossy sauce. That’s mitarashi dango, a traditional street food you’ll see often in a Japanese festival. The uniqueness of this treat is that you mix soy sauce with a sweet dango, I mean, how?

Salted Caramel, but Make it Japanese.

Do you have the same question as me at first? Haha 😄 you’re not alone in thinking that — mitarashi dango can sound a little unusual at first because we don’t usually expect soy sauce in desserts. Most people imagine soy sauce as purely savory, but in Japanese cooking, it’s often used in sweets too, especially when paired with sugar.

So, here’s why it works:

Soy sauce contains umami + saltiness that balances the sweetness, so the flavor isn’t cloying. Meanwhile, Sugar, when simmered with soy sauce, creates a glaze that’s glossy and slightly smoky. The summary makes combo = sweet-salty harmony. Similar to how salted caramel or chocolate with sea salt tastes surprisingly good.

So, mitarashi dango is Japan’s version of that sweet-salty trend. The chewy rice dumplings act like a neutral base, and the sauce makes every bite complex—sweet, savory, and satisfying.

Think of it this way: if you like salted caramel, kettle corn, or even Indonesian kue lupis with salty grated coconut + sweet palm sugar syrup, then mitarashi dango is right up that same flavor alley. Now, let’s try and make it first, then you’re going to make Mitarashi Dango for the second time!

Dango

  • Soft Tofu; Besides having a high water content, silken tofu or soft tofu adds smoothness and a slight sweetness to the rice dumplings. Tofu acts as the water in the dough and the key to achieving a more tender, soft, and chewy texture. This also keeps the dango chewy but not too tough, giving a melt-in-the-mouth texture.
  • Glutinous Rice Flour: a type of flour made from sweet rice known as “mochigome” in Japanese. The base ingredient for dango. It gives the dumplings their signature chewiness. Without glutinous rice flour, the texture would be too crumbly or firm. I use the available in my kitchen which is regular glutinous rice flour
  • Sugar: I use regular white caster sugar for sweetness in the sauce, but you can also use granulated or even light brown sugar, depending on your preference.

Sauce

  • Sugar: To sweeten both the dumplings and the glaze. I went with granulated white sugar, but feel free to use light brown sugar or coconut sugar for the glaze. When cooked, it helps the sauce turn glossy.
  • Cornstarch: To thicken the glaze. The starch thickens the sauce. I recommend using either kudzu starch or potato starch. These both form a more translucent gel than cornstarch, and they don’t get gummy as they chill.
  • Soy Sauce; For saltiness and plenty of umami. To make this recipe gluten-free, replace the soy sauce with coconut aminos. It creates that iconic balance of sweet and savory, which makes mitarashi dango unique compared to other sweet rice dumplings.
  • Water: to balance the taste and improve texture. It also controls the consistency, making sure the glaze is not too thick or too watery.

Equipment

  • Bamboo Skewer

How to Make Mitarashi Dango

Prepare the skewers
First, soak the bamboo skewers in water before using them. This prevents them from burning during the toasting step.

Make the dough
Next, mash the soft tofu with a fork. Add the glutinous rice flour and sugar, then knead with your hands until everything is well combined and forms a smooth dough

Try homemade Mitarashi Dango, chewy rice dumplings coated with a caramelized soy glaze that’s surprisingly addictive, and you’ll love.

Shape the dango
After that, divide the dough into 24 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball with your hands until smooth.

Cook the dumplings
Meanwhile, bring a pot of water to a boil over medium heat. Carefully drop in the dango balls and cook until they float to the surface.

Cool them down
Once they float, remove the dango from the boiling water and transfer them immediately into a bowl of ice water to stop the cooking and firm up the texture.

Make the sauce
In the meantime, combine all the sauce ingredients in a small saucepan. Bring it to a boil, then stir until thickened. Turn off the heat and set aside.

Skewer and grill
Now, thread three dango balls onto each bamboo skewer and place them on a plate. Lightly char the center of each dango with a blow torch (or over an open flame) until slightly browned for extra aroma.

Finish and serve

Finally, pour the sauce generously over the skewered dango. Serve immediately and enjoy your Mitarashi Dango!
